My husband had several procedures done in the day unit. The first time, during his recovery on level 1, the ants ate his sandwich whilst he slept. A swarm of ants! In a hospital, eating his lunch. If we can keep ants out of our house, the hospital can keep ants out of its recovery room. Inexcusably bad housekeeping!

My experience was awesome, had best care ever from the beginning to the end of day surgery. Couldn't ask for better. A big thankyou to all of you.

My husband said he had to sit for hours in uncomfortable stiff chairs (other patients complained about the chairs) and be shunted without explanation from one room to another to wait some more. The procedure itself too 7 minutes, which is far less than the Mayo Clinic's 20 minute minimum. All those hours of waiting and for a test that was so short that it could not have detected all problems.

My husband told me there was one woman who had been waiting since 7 AM without food or water. That woman was not happy.

I recommend that the day unit re-assess its attitude and treatment of patients and their families. Our time matters also! And it is unconscionable for the day unit to intentionally cause patients to suffer without food and water unnecessarily. And all for the staff scheduling convenience, because they do not wish to schedule on a more granular level and risk having the doctors wait for the patients. Shame on you! I am supposed to have a procedure done but won't do it because I do not wish to go without food and water unnecessarily for hours whilst waiting in an uncomfortable chair. When your self-centered procedures cause patients to defer medical care, there is something seriously wrong.

The second time was for a procedure which involves very awful preparation. He had a one o'clock appointment, so could not eat or drink for 4 hours prior. But he was not actually treated until 4:15. The day unit made him suffer for over 3 more hours without food or water. The receptionist explained that it is for the scheduling convenience of the staff. It is evident that patients' time is evidently of zero importance.

A friend told me that her teenage son had to wait from 8 AM to about 5 PM for his colonoscopy (on a different day but at Cairns Private Hospital), and also without food or water. The staff told her that the patients with diabetes were seen first. Her son was very uncomfortable, and complained, to no avail.
